Male Menopause and Irritable Male Syndrome

Dr. Fred: Jed, your book, Irritable Male Syndrome opened my eyes to what I'm dealing with that person. I can identify with the "irritable male" and recommended the book to many of my clients and you choose associates.What were men, as a focus for writing and clinical practice?

When I started working in the area 44 years ago, most of the focus was on women. I felt the need of men's health champion.

Dr. Fred: Particularly with regard to the third age (from 45 to 75 years), you would summarize what are the key questions that people have to deal with?

There are issues that both men and women have to deal with as we age: aches and pains, illness, death of parents, young adults and children, etc. But there are also issues that are unique to people such as Male Menopause (Andropause), Irritable Male Syndrome, and male-type depression that I see in my books.

Dr. Fred: A lot of what we offer our readers has to do with debunking the myth of the midlife crisis and related mid-life, as a transition. What is your opinion on this?

I see a mid-life, much as similar to adolescence. In both cases, the life we ​​are doing the basic step. In the case of adolescence, we move from childhood to adulthood first. In the case of a mid-life, we make the transition from the first adult life, what I call superadulthood. The first time we have a chance to really be who we are and should be.

Dr. Fred: The products and services you offer, you're writing on depression, menopause, irritable male syndrome and. How are they related?

I think these issues as three distinct but overlapping circles. Male Menopause affects all people, sometime between the ages of 40 and 55, although it may begin as early as 35 or as late as 65. Irritable male syndrome affects smaller but still significant proportion of men (perhaps 60-80%). Male type depression affects fewer people. We assumed that women suffer from depression at rates that are twice that of men. But my research shows that many men are underdiagnosed and undertreated depression because we use the wrong criteria for diagnosis.

Dr. Fred: How would you distinguish or differentiate (key aspects) Irritable Male Syndrome from similar syndromes?

Irritable Male Syndrome has four main causes: Hormonal fluctuations, changes in brain chemistry, high voltage, and changes in male identity. It takes an experienced practitioner to distinguish IMS on such things as depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD and other disorders.

Dr. Fred: You say that "IMS, in the end of violence." Would you elaborate on this?

We live in a world that is violent. We see it expressed in childhood, when children are abused (including circumcision, which I believe is a form of child sexual abuse). As we get older this destructive parenting manifests itself in irritability, hypersensitivity, anger and rage. When she turned inward, it can lead to suicide.
