Study of the anti-obesity drug orlistat (Xenical)

A new study concludes that daily treatment with the lipase inhibitor drug orlistat (Xenical) both aids in the loss of weight and reduces the risk of obesity-related conditions, including heart disease and stroke.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Endocrinology and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee recently approved the use of Orlistat, a novel weight loss medication that has been widely tested throughout Europe (see June 1997 OMR for story).
